Lame duck to dead duck
The past 24 hours have (to my knowledge) been unprecedented in British politics. Never before have seven MPs resigned from the government on the same day over the same issue - the future of the Prime Minister.
The most telling point of the whole mess comes when you ask the question, Tom who? Who is Tom Watisname? I know him because he's my local MP, but I bet most of Joe public have no idea who he is, let alone know who or even what the other PPSs are. Yet these people have dictated the policy of the Prime Minister. When you have these nobody's dictating the Prime Ministers policy, forcing his hand, you begin to see in just how much trouble the man is in.
Tony Blair may well announce his imediateate resignation later today, I doubt it, but anything is possible in the current situation. Yet one thing I think is sure, and that is what ever date he sets out in his "timetable" will not be the date he leaves. Those who have resigned (and however many have signed all these letters) made it very clear that anything but now isn't good enough, and if yesterday is anything to go by, I don't think they will let him forget it.
